What I love about these movies and the old school Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the crazy deductive skills of Sherlock Holmes. Nothing escapes him. He can look at you and tell you what you ate for your last three meals based on some crumbs on your shirt, a stain on your collar, and a scent on your breath. He can enter a room and tell you how many people have come and gone over the last 24 hours. My favorite from this movie though is when he and his hyper intelligent brother try to out deduce each other. They take one look at each other and start saying things like, "I see you bought a new bow for your violin."
...since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. -- Romans 1:18-19
Look around you. Everywhere you turn, you can see the evidence. All of creation testifies to show us God exists, God is powerful, and more. When you look upon the trees, the ground, the clouds, and everything you can see, the existence of it all proves that there is a Creator. When you see a fierce thunderstorm, feel the heat of the blazing sun (or miss it in the winter), or see the distant stars and galaxies at night, their grandness proves that God is powerful. The complexities of the cell show us the great intelligence of God. The beauty of the sunset shows us the glory and creativity of God. The provision of an abundant and fruitful planet shows us the goodness of God. Best of all, the life and death of Jesus show us the character, love, forgiveness, and mercy of God.
Everywhere we look, God has left an abundance of clues so that it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to piece it all together. In fact, the Bible tells us that there is soooo much evidence that all of these things should be plain to us. It is obvious that God exists if we just open our eyes and look around. And all of that evidence leaves us without an excuse.
Today, if you are not a Christian and don't believe, please open your eyes. The whole of the world bears witness that God is real. When you stand before Him one day, you will be left with no excuse to say, "I didn't know you were really there!" The evidence is all around you. Please turn to God and put your faith in His Son Jesus. If you are new to Christianity, get a Bible and read through the gospel of John. If you've decided to become a believer or have questions, talk to your local pastor or me. We'd be happy to help you start your walk of faith. Today, if you are a Christian, then be reminded to open up your eyes! Take a look around and praise God today! Don't miss all of the amazing ways that creation is singing God's praises. Get bundled up and spend some time outside soon and look at all of the amazing things God has made. And let that lead you to worship the Mighty and Good Creator.
I look all around me and I deduce that God is good and worthy of praise. It's elementary my dear friend.
And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." -- Isaiah 6:3
